Not sure I agree with this.

The long tail phenomenon is exactly the reason why big media won't dominate like TV/radio. Would you say big media dominates blogging, or the web in general? Even if some pockets of big media "get it", there's simply so much niche content available and sorting the wheat from chaff will become a lot easier with collaborative filtering and efforts like attention.xml. Hosting is not actually as much of a problem as I think many people believe, eg. libsyn offer unlimited bandwidth and restrict only how much is uploaded per month. Bittorrent too.

I definitely agree. There's nothing wrong with being obscure, er a part of the long tail. :) There are a lot of people that seem to think that podcasting won't follow the same trend as all other media and that it will be the rise of the little guy which is really quite delusional.

Any new medium whether it be radio, television or podcasting goes through this. In the beginning the people involved are still trying to determine how things are going to work and hence there is a lot of experimenting and opportunities for small but innovative players. However as time goes on the crowd tends to move towards a particular model or format.

As a potential podcaster myself, I'm not looking to become the next Ted Turner or Howard Stern, hell if I can avoid becoming the next Allan Jones I will consider myself saved. Instead I am trying to inform and entertain a market which allows me to be a little different to the run of the mill.
