Why Is Privacy Important?

Ben Laurie:

…because it actually affects peoples lives, and not in a positive way: studies have shown that if people believe they are being observed, then they tend to alter their behaviour to match what they think the observer wants to see. I want people to be able to do their thing without fear of consequences from bigots or The Man or even “ordinary people”. None of us are ordinary and the world will be a poorer place if we were made to be.

I've seen this argument come up a couple of times recently but it seems to be seriously underrepresented in my opinion. This is the key response to the "you only care about privacy if you've got something to hide" argument. Essentially, we all have something we hide from various people and even if we don't mind them finding out, just the fact that we know someone is watching makes us behave differently.

I know that if you feel someone is watching you you will act differently. Knowing that somone is watching every move you make can affect you really bad. What if they not only watch your actions but somehow are able to know every thought you make, how bad would that affect an individual. Do you think he would be able to live normally, feeling free. We all have sometimes bad thoughts about those we love but what a comfort is for us knowing that they will never find out. Although we do feel bad for thinking that way. How bad knowing that people is watching every action you make and the thoughts you have, how bad can that affect you?

Sometimes people you don’t know watches everything you do but you don’t really care because if you do something wrong or something they will not like it won’t matter you don’t have nothing to lose. Because you don’t have any relation with that person. But when someone you really care about watches you you try do the best you can to impresionate. Inside you might somtimes be bad but you can control yourself and be able to act to the contrary of that. But if people knows what is inside you, when you try to act to the contrary of that you will find yourself feeling fake, or as if you’re only pretending.

I hope you will be able to understand this and maybe give me an advice. It’s just something that i thought about. If it’s hard to live knowing that somebody is watching you how hard would it be and how will it affect an individual knowing that people not only are watching them but listening to their thoughts.
