Good analysis. I couldn't agree more, both Joel and Arno take things a little too far. As a mac user, I like shutdown the way it is. It doesn't have to be perfect, as long as its easy to get used to, and not too much trouble to use. One click after the power button, with all the options you could need, is damn fine. The real culprit in making Microsoft's implementation suck is the hierarchal nesting. Fuck that. One click, with all the options.

iPod reboot is middle button + menu for 5sec, and strangely enough I discovered that the iPod off function doesn't work when in the menus - only on the "now playing" screen.

Ah, the play button. I knew you held down something.

Dual booting - good point. Not that most users do that but it is a common enough use case that it shouldn't be made painful.

Hey, someone who thinks 'restart' is unnecessery has never dual booted. :p. I restart for new kernels, I restart for Apple Updates, I restart for dual booting, I restart because Finder has going ABSOLUTELY CRAZY and won't DIE. And I very rarely sit at my computer during the restart. I hit restart and go do something elsewhere..

So yeah. I think restart belongs.

I've also used shutdown maybe five times this year.

It's also hold down the play button to turn an iPod off. I was flabberghasted to find that out...
