One of the key influences for where you appear in Google search results is how many people are linking to you. So getting our employees (and board!) blogging is a really useful way to increase our visibility in general and in Google search results. Putting up generically useful tips, info, commentary etc and participating in conversations that are going gets other people to link in as well and the results build.
I do tend to agree that we need to find something else to compliment our Google advertising and an aspect of that as partly my responsibility. In particular, I think it's a part of my role to build community and word of mouth networks. I suspect there are other opportunities that we should be looking into as well but I'm not sure what they would be. I know Marco has mentioned I few things he's looking into and I want to sync up with him next week to get a handle on our strategies.
All that said, marketing and reviewing the success of marketing is one of the things I need to extract from Marco's head while I'm over here because it's way outside my area of expertise at the moment.

As far as I’m aware (and I suspect this is the Google party line), Google doesn’t adjust the search results based on payment, but they do adjust the positioning of the adwords ads on the side of the search (and a couple at the top if they are very regularly clicked). Intersted in your thoughts on Google. Couple of points. 1. I was at a conference recently where 5 x different system integrators were sitting at my table. I asked how much they spent on Google per month...figures were roughly the same. I asked what their key words were...roughly the same again...guess what..their ratings were spread over 4 pages when key words were put in!! Conspiracy? Not sure. 2. In Japan in Feb this year I heard a leading search engine CEO talk about his Chinese engine (who could that be?)...and how they search...privately admitting that the more someone pays the more they can pay...so results are "managed" to ensure that the client is left hungry, therefore spending more to climb the search results tree...but never really get to the top. Google search was once a great secret and indeed fantastic for ephox - but now I think we are getting diminishing returns...think we need a Yahoo!, MSN or alike to ramp it up and give better value. BTW love the idea of Planet Ephox!

Hi AJ and readers,

Intersted in your thoughts on Google. Couple of points. 1.
