The Difference Between Engineers And Managers

When an engineer can reproduce a bug they get excited because it means they can be sure to fix it.

When a manager can reproduce a bug they get annoyed because it means they keep running into it.

This is currently the most frustrating part of the transition from engineer to manager. I have in fact submitted a patch on one occasion – it was rejected because it didn't have tests. Sigh.

Ha! Oh I know that one so well. Often when I can provide a fix and unit tests and details of the systems testing which is required the change often gets “deferred” because it needs review and test resources from someone else’s budget and their priorities aren’t the same as mine. Pah.

    Hi Danny,

If AJ’s fix included a unit test, I wouldn’t have given it a second thought (after just a quick look at the test). But he obviously isn’t an engineer anymore. 8)

I think engineers go for the solution .
    managers only inspire them….
